I chose to record "If We Make It Through December" for this compilation upon the request of Theo, but I developed a deep connection with the song as December approached and money became tighter. It’s such a great example of a song where the specific setting and palpable hopefulness in the face of despair make it relatable on some universal level. Merle takes us through his insecurities and failure, but somehow, the theme is redemption, as unlikely and unattainable as it may seem. If we make it through December we’ll be fine…
