I chose to cover this song because I see the end of the year as a time to look back at how we have succeeded and failed, both personally and as a society. Simon and Garfunkel used this song this way in 1966, and I updated it for 2018.

The clips that play in the background are from news coverage of events this year: the murder of black men by police, of children in their schools, and of worshippers at their temple, as well as the widespread protest that followed. We have escalated international tensions, brought pervasive cultures of sexual assault into the light, and locked asylum-seeking children in cages. Still - there's beautiful things in this world, and there's always next year.
