I discovered “Star of Bethlehem” on an album of Emmylou Harris duets. She and Neil Young have such incredible, unique voices, and the harmonies on their version of this song is chilling.

I’ve always felt this tune to be an acceptance of the harsh realities of life. Ultimately, all we have in life is ourselves — we are alone in a world that rewards the greedy, takes advantage of the innocent, and constantly deplete us of our goodness. The only thing that we have is this shining sense of morality, this driving internal purpose, this “Star of Bethlehem” which guides us through the inevitable dark moments.
